Your Guide to Getting Any Common Stain Out


You sloshed, spilled, or splattered something on your favourite shirt, dress or sweater and now you’re panic Googling. 

Life’s messy and stains are unavoidable, but with the right cleaning combo, your favourite shirt still has hope.

Disclaimer: Always read the label on your garment before following any of these steps. Getting a stain out is pointless if your shirt shrinks in the process!

Oil Stains

These ones just look like water… until they never dry. 

  1. Dab rubbing alcohol on the stain until the affected area is fully saturated.

  2. Let rest for a few minutes

  3. Rub with a plain bar of soap

  4. Rinse with cold water

  5. Air dry. (Hint: if your plastic laundry pegs suck, try these).

  6. Repeat if any stain remains.

 Red wine stain removal

Red wine lovers rejoice. 

  1. Act Fast.

  2. Dab white vinegar on the stain. This will neutralize red and purple pigments. 

  3. Rub in laundry detergent.

  4. Then launder in hot water.

So you had a great meal, and got a not-so-great stain.

  1. Flush under cold water from the inside-out.

  2. Work detergent into the stain from the outside, in.

  3. Let sit.

  4. Rinse thoroughly.

  5. If the stain persists, dab on white vinegar and repeat.

Don’t sweat it. 

  1. Soak the stained areas with white vinegar for about an hour.

  2. Rub with a clean toothbrush, brush or flannel.

  3. Rinse.

  1. Flush stain outward with cold water.

  2. Apply liquid detergent to the stain.

  3. Air-dry. 

  4. Inspect and repeat as necessary.

  1. Put a paper towel below the stain. This will prevent outward growth.

  2. Carefully apply Rubbing Alcohol to the stain. Use an eyedropper if you have one.

  3. Dab with a clean white rag until no further pigment comes out.
